Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project Tours: Available During Spanish Market

Tuesday, July 21, Thursday, July 23 and Sunday, July 26 at 9:00 am

VELARDE – In celebration of Santa Fe’s Spanish Market, the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project is offering tours of some of the most impressive images of Spanish Colonial era petroglyphs on the Wells Petroglyph Preserve.  Of the 75,000 images that are thought to be on Mesa Prieta, an estimated 10% represent the Spanish culture introduced when Juan de Onate, and his train of settlers and strange European animals, traveled to Northern New Mexico on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro ending at Ohkay Owingeh. This was the first European settlement in the Southwest and preceded the English arrival at Plymouth Rock by 23 years.

The Wells Petroglyph Preserve, north of Española, is little known, but is thought to be the largest petroglyph site in New Mexico, featuring rock images from possibly 7500 years ago to today. Join one of our intimate, docent-led Spanish Market tours and experience the wonder of the petroglyphs against the beautiful natural backdrop of lush cottonwoods and astounding landscapes.

Three public tours, themed especially for Spanish Market attendees, are scheduled: Saturday, Tuesday, July 21, Thursday, July 23 and Sunday, July 26 at 9:00 am. The tours begin at 9:00 a.m. and are approximately one and a half hours long. These exclusive tours are limited to 12 participants on each date. A $50.00 fee is requested per participant. Reservations for these tours are essential.

About the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project

Our organization, which began in 1999, has three goals:

TO RECORD as many of the estimated 75,000 petroglyphs and other archaeological features found on the Mesa Prieta as possible. TO EDUCATE and inform the archaeological community, local people and visitors about the Mesa Prieta treasure. Our primary focus is educating young people. We hold a Summer Youth Intern Program and we have developed a dynamic science-based elementary school curriculum called “Discovering Mesa Prieta”. We offer public and private tours for groups and individuals to raise awareness of the petroglyphs. In addition, we sponsor a community lecture series,  “Pláticas Presentations”, which focuses on Northern New Mexico culture and landscape. TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE the important cultural legacy of Mesa Prieta for generations to come is our ultimate goal.
