March Crime Stats From Public Safety Dept. Reveal Possible Good News

ESPAÑOLA — On Wednesday, May 6 the City of Española Public Safety Committee met and heard testimony from the City’s police and , and fire departments as well as the municipal court.

An in-depth comparison of the statistics between the months of February and March of this year for crime and calls for emergency assistance of one type or another were presented by Public Safety Director Richard Gallegos and Corporal Espinoza. City Public Safety Department reported the following numbers:

Although there were some changes between the numbers from February to March, of special note was the changes between March 2014 and March 2015.

From March 2014 to March 2015 arrests appear to have been reduced by 25%, reported burglaries were down over 50% and DWI’s also show a decrease over the year. On that note the stats also showed a higher number of DWI incidences in February.

A single month of number is insufficient to establish a statistical trend but if these decreases hold it is likely to be welcome news to the community as a whole.
