The Northeast Large School All-Star girls basketball team lost both games at the North-South All-Star series May 31 and June 1 in Albuquerque. Northeast battled in both contests, but couldn’t quite overcome their opponents down the stretch.
In their first game, Northeast fell to the Southeast All-Stars 77-69 May 31 at Manzano High School. Northeast couldn’t contain Hobbs High School’s Amiah Smith, who poured in 29 points.
The score at halftime was 35-27 in favor of Southeast. Sandia High School’s Sapirah Broussard had 12 second-half points and led Northeast with 15 points. Robertson High School’s Alianza Darley had 14 points. Espanola Valley High School’s Kaylinn Martinez and Kaylee Chavez each scored five points, while Pojoaque Valley High School’s Taylor Roybal had four points.
In the second game June 1 against the Southwest All-Stars, Northeast made a run in the first half that started with a sweet behind-the-back pass from Chavez to Darley for a layup. Darley followed with a steal and layup. A three-pointer by Martinez made the score 23-21 in favor of Southwest. Another steal and layup by Darley tied the score with 9:16 left in the first half. A pair of free throws by Robertson’s Jazmine Jenkins gave Northeast a 25-23 lead over Southwest.
Southwest took control of the first half with a 14-2 run. Silver High School’s Jazzmine Torrez’s and West Mesa High School’s Maiah Rivas had three-pointers during the run. A basket by West Mesa’s Esperanza Varoz gave Southwest a 40-27 lead. Southeast led 41-29 at halftime.
Northeast chipped away at Southwest’s lead in the second half. Following a three-pointer by Santa Fe High School’s Taylor Salazar and an old-fashioned, three-point play by Jenkins, Northeast had cut the lead down 52-50 with 9:20 left in the second half.
Mayfield High School’s Alize Ruiz scored to make it 54-50 in favor of Southwest. A three-pointer by Eldorado High School’s Colexi Brazier got Northeast to within a point of tying the game.
That was as close as Northeast would get, as Ruiz canned a three-pointer to start a 13-0 run by Southeast that put them in control of the game. The final score was 73-64 in favor of Southwest.
Ruiz led Southwest with 17 points. Brazier led Northeast with 14 points. Kaylinn Martinez had five points. Roybal had four points and Chavez three points.
