Legislation to Expand Hemp Industry Passes House of Representatives
House Democrats pass economic development initiative
Santa Fe, N.M. – Today, the House of Representatives passed House Bill 581/a, sponsored by Rep. Derrick Lente (D-Sandia Pueblo), to expand the hemp industry and bring new jobs to New Mexico communities. House Bill 581/a creates clear standards for hemp production, testing, research, manufacturing, and transport of hemp.
“This legislation will help farmers and manufacturers access this lucrative industry while maintaining compliance with federal and state laws, and developing new, innovative products like CBD oils, textiles, and clothing. This is a result of bringing all stakeholders together – including farmers, tribal nations, state agencies, and private organizations – to develop comprehensive legislation that will bring millions of dollars to New Mexico,” said Rep. Derrick Lente.
House Bill 581/a passed with broad bipartisan support and now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
