Lady Hawks Hammer McCurdy, Take District Title
By George Morse Sports and Outdoors
The Dulce High School Lady Hawks finished the District 2-3A regular season undefeated and wrapped up the District 2-3A title with a convincing 68-39 victory over McCurdy Charter School Feb. 17 at McCurdy. The Lady Hawks finished the regular season 6-0 and will receive an automatic spot in the Class 3A state basketball tournament. They join the Dulce boys basketball team, which had already wrapped up the District 2-3A title prior to defeating the McCurdy boys basketball team 79-69 Feb. 17 at Dulce. The Hawks also finished the regular season 6-0 in District 2-3A.
Dulce controlled the game practically from start to finish. McCurdy had scored the game’s first two points off the opening tipoff on a layup by Alyssa Edmonds. That lead didn’t last long, as Danesha Gonzales buried pair of three-pointers around a basket by Brittney Vicenti for an 8-2 Dulce lead. The Lady Bobcats managed to hang around for a while until Dulce finished the first quarter with a 9-0 run that ended with a three-pointer at the buzzer by Vicenti that gave the Lady Hawks a 20-8 lead.

Serena Barela and Edmonds tried to keep McCurdy in the game in the second quarter. Each with old-fashioned, three-point plays. The score was 28—18 when the Lady Hawks finished the first half going 6-of-7 from the free-throw line, including 4-of-5 by Julisa Christie, to take a 34-18 lead at halftime.
Dulce began the third quarter with a 16-2 run that sealed the Lady Bobcats’ fate. Brannon Vigil and Caitlin Duncan had three-pointers during the run. The Lady Hawks led 50-26 heading into the fourth quarter.
McCurdy never got to within 20 points of Dulce in the fourth quarter. The Lady Hawks led by as many as 31 points and cruised to a 29-point win. Vicenti had 17 points to lead Dulce. Edmonds had 17 points for McCurdy.
The Lady Hawks are 15-9 on the season and currently ranked ninth in Class 3A. Depending on the outcome of earlier games in the upcoming District 2-3A tournament, the Lady Hawks will host the District tournament championship game Friday or Saturday. If both McCurdy teams make it to the championship games, both the boys and girls championship games will be played on Saturday. If a girls team other than McCurdy makes it to the championship, the girls championship game will be played on Friday.
McCurdy is 13-11 on the season and currently ranked 15th in Class 3A. Only 16 teams are selected for the Class 3A state basketball tournament, so the Lady Bobcats will be looking for an upset to improve their seeding.
The Dulce boys team will host the District 2-3A tournament championship game Saturday. The Hawks are 18-6 on the season and ranked fourth in Class 3A. The McCurdy boys are 10-15 overall and, like the girls, ranked 15th in the state.
