Heinrich Statement In Honor of Veterans Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 10, 2015) – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement today in honor of Veterans Day, which falls on Wednesday, November 11. Senator Heinrich will commemorate Veterans Day in Roswell and join the Lincoln County community to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Fort Stanton State Veterans’ Cemetery.
“On Veterans Day, communities across America come together to pay tribute to our men and women in uniform who defend our nation and to those who selflessly sacrificed their lives to preserve the freedom and liberty we enjoy today.
“The tradition of men and women answering the call of duty runs deep in New Mexico’s history. From the Navajo Code Talkers and Bataan Death Marchers, to the Korean and Vietnam War GI’s, to the men and women serving today at Cannon, Holloman, Kirtland, Fort Bliss, White Sands Missile Range, and across the world. Their unwavering devotion and extraordinary courage reflect the core principles we share as Americans.
“We also come together today to honor the strength and resilience of our military families. Especially those who have lost a loved one–a sister, a father, a son, a spouse, an aunt, or a great-grandfather they may never have met. Few sacrifices are as selfless as those our military service men and women make in defense of our country. We owe our veterans and military families more than a debt of gratitude–we owe them action in both our words and deeds.
“The ability to maintain the strongest and most dedicated military force in the world depends on our nation’s ability to keep its promises. Its promises to care for the families of fallen soldiers and to provide our veterans the best care, benefits, and opportunities our country have to offer.
“On the Armed Services Committee, I’m working hard to ensure our men and women in uniform have the support they need to keep our nation safe and to fulfill the promises we’ve made to those who serve. New Mexico plays a pivotal role in our national security, and I will continue to fight for our personnel and missions in my role on this committee.
“I join all New Mexicans in honoring our fallen heroes and keeping those serving both home and abroad today in our thoughts and prayers.”
