First Big Winter Storm Warning Of The Season
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a winter storm warning for northern New Mexico for a storm event that is expected to affect the area from early Friday morning through Saturday morning.
Heavy snow combined with strong to damaging winds to impact Northern New Mexico Friday, especially in the higher terrain.
Snow amounts between one and two feet are possible in San Juan Mountains above Chama. Amounts will be less elsewhere, mostly ranging between 4 and 10 inches in the far northwest highlands and upper Rio Grande valley. The combination of wind and snow will likely create treacherous travel conditions Friday through Friday night. Snow levels between 8000 and 9000 feet early Friday will lower through Saturday. Temperatures will be cold enough for snow for all locations by late Friday night.
Strong winds blowing west to southwest 35 to 50 mph with gusts between 55 and 70 mph can be expected. Near blizzard conditions are possible.
Both snow and winds are expected to taper off Saturday.
