Fire Guts Vacant Building Near Santa Claran Casino

Staff Report

Wednesday night around 9:40 p.m. a fire broke out in a vacant building on Riverside Dr. in Espanola, gutting the former laundry-mat. The fire quickly consumed the interior and roof of the cinderblock structure, located between the Santa Claran casino and the also vacant Arrow Motel.

Espanola police and fire department arrived on the scene within minutes of the first 911 call and Teresa Martinez with the Espanola Fire Dept. took control of the incident. By the end of the night over 18 fire trucks and nearly 40 firefighters were on site, with units arriving from fire departments around the region. Santa Clara, Chimayo, La Mesilla and others were on site.

The fire was extinguished before midnight and mop up work took several more hours. By morning the site was no longer smoking and Espanola Fire Department reported that no one was injured in the fire. Only the cinderblock walls of the old building remain standing.
