Fiesta Returns to the Valley

After a year’s absence, the Fiesta del Valle de Española returned to the Española.
The Fiesta was not held in 2018 after the City of Española repealed the Fiesta del Valle de Española Ordinance and ended the City’s relationship with the Fiesta. In response, concerned citizens, businesses and organizations founded the Fiesta del Valle de Española Corporation, a nonprofit whose goal was to continue the tradition of the Fiesta. Through fundraisers and sponsorships, the Corporation succeeded in holding the Fiesta again. The 2019 Fiesta del Valle de Española still retained many of the cultural and religious traditions of previous Fiestas. The 2019 Fiesta marked the 50th anniversary of the Fiesta del Valle de Española.
La Conquistadora was brought from St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe to Sacred Heart Parish Church in Española for the Vespers Mass July 12 at the beginning of the Fiesta del Valle. The team of Torch Runners carried the torch from Santuario de Chimayo to Sacred Heart Church in Española as part on the opening ceremonies of the Fiesta del Valle. The Torch Run was initiated to honor the soldiers who have died in the Vietnam War and has continued in remembrance and to honor those who have given their lives to defend America

It was under then-Mayor Lucero that the City of Española adopted the Ordinance establishing the Fiesta as an annual event to be held the second weekend of July. The Fiesta commemorates the colonization of the Española Valley in 1598 by an expedition led by Don Juan de Onate. Jerry Torres portrayed Don Juan de Onate and Geraldine Maestas served as La Reina at the 1969 Fiesta del Valle and were in attendance 50 years later at the 2019 Fiesta del Valle. Emi Arte Flamenco was one of many performers who entertained the crowd July 13 at the Fiesta del Valle.
Along with the Fiesta del Valle, a Folk Art Show featuring the work of local artists was also being held on the Plaza de Española.
