Not One Reina, But All Of Them: Fiesta Council Invites All Former Reinas To Participate In Fiesta This Year
ESPAÑOLA – Vice President of the Fiesta Council, Esperanza Martinez, addressed the Española City Council to update members on the Fiesta and the removal of the 2015 La Reina de Española , Angelina Vigil. As previously reported HERE, the Fiesta Council Executive Board voted to remove Vigil from the role of Reina for the 2015 season due to a series of social media postings Vigil made after her home was robbed. Some of those comments offended some members of the community.
In her address, Esperanza Martinez noted that although it is not uncommon for the Fiesta to not have a “La Reina,” this year the Council has decided to celebrate the past 90 years of Fiesta del Valle de Española tradition by inviting all former “La Reina’s” to participate in the parade.
Mayor Lucero encouraged local businesses and members of the community to support the Fiesta Council and help offset the lack of city funding available through the Lodgers Tax. Councilor Peggy Sue Martinez thanked the Fiesta Council for their hard work and diligence in the “La Reina” matter and noted that there is “lots of pride in our Valley.”
