Fiesta Council Hold Contest To Select 2015 Reina and Oñate

ESPAÑOLA – The Española Valley Fiesta Council held the annual Oñate y Reina Competition Saturday night at the Nick Salazar center of the arts theater at Northern New Mexico University.

This year the Fiesta Council judges were Mark Trujillo community services director for the City of Española, City Councilor Michelle Martinez and State Representative Debbie Rodella.

The contestants and winners were Oñate Contestant Joel Chacon from Arroyo Seco and La Reina Contestant Angelina S. Vigil from Española.

Also selected were Samantha Barela, Liliaresa Amparan and Victoria Chavez for Teen Princessas. Princescita contestants were Trinity Lucero, Sophia Sisneros, Tyana Garcia and Morgan Gutierrez.

Also attending Saturday’s contest was the current reigning Reina, Vanessa Gonzales who spoke on the meaning of serving as Reina for the community of Española. “It has been an excellent experience to represent our culture, our history reglion and most of all God.” Gonzales said. “Fiestas are about living in a multicultural community.”

When asked about her motivation to run Angelina Vigil said she decided to run because her family is culture based. “For me it is part of appreciating where I come from. I also want to inspire young girls and to keep our culture going.”

The winners of Saturday’s contest will be formally announced at the Fiesta Council Announcement Ball on April 17 at Ohkay Owingeh ballroom.
