Fiber Rocks! : Call For Fiber Artists
A special notice from the Espanola Fiber Arts Center and the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project.
Petroglyphs are not the remnants of some long lost civilization – they are part of our living culture. What is stored in the petroglyphs is not written in any book or to be found in any library. These images, edged in rock and considered sacred, represent many cultures and are meant to be preserved. They inspire artistic expression of contemporary artists, and raise awareness about the local heritage.
The Española Valley Fiber Arts Center’s (EVFAC) with its mission to preserve and promote the textile heritage of Northern New Mexico by providing learning and teaching experiences for all ages and backgrounds has partnered with Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project’s (MPPP) an organization that documents, protect and sustain endangered archaeological treasures in the northern Rio Grande Valley.
Both organizations share the mission of education, and Fiber Rocks! will bring new audiences for each – petroglyph aficionados will become aware of EVFAC’s educational programs and fiber arts aficionados will become aware of MPPP’s educational programs. Fiber Rocks! will be a traveling exhibition beginning in 2015. Once curated, new show locations throughout the Southwest will be pursued and shall offer artists more exposure of their work.
Guidelines and Requirements
Theme: Fiber Rocks! Artwork inspired by petroglyphs. Fiber-based artwork must be original and created recently, and inspired by petroglyphs found on the MPPP preserve. Both conceptual and technical artists are encouraged to apply.
Guided Tours: Accepted artists responding to this project’s Call for Artists will experience petroglyphs first-hand during a MPPP guided tour of the Petroglyph Wells Project Preserve. Admission for one tour is included in the application fee. The tour will address issues of cultural sensitivity, conservation, and aim to educate and inspire fiber artists about aspects of area cultural heritage. Artists will NOT be allowed to use cameras during the tour, only sketchbooks. This limitation will emphasize the empathetic rendering of images in the field for later presentation in a fiber art medium of their choice, rather than copying the petroglyphs. Artists are welcome to schedule any additional tours by calling MPPP directly.
Medium & Technique: Artists can render the petroglyph images in the medium of their choice;however the final piece must include at least 80% fiber. We encourage all tapestry weavers, quilters, knitters, felters, paper makers, fabric dyers, embellishers, fiber sculptors, etc. to create original work for this call. Both 2D and 3D work are applicable for submission.
Sale of Work: To respect the partner requirements and mission, all artwork will be “not for sale” and will remain the property of the artist during the course of the shows. Artist also will not be paid for creating and submitting their work.
Advertising: EVFAC will prepare all advertising materials, press releases, articles in local and regional print media as well as online. The shows will be advertise extensively as well as feature articles in regional and national publications pursued, to offer artist widespread recognition.
Awards: Three winners will be awarded $100 each, while three honorary award winners will receive a $25 gift certificate to EVFAC which can be used in the retail store as well as towards classes and workshops.
Review Panel: Applicants who submit an application will be screened by a review panel composed of MPPC, EVFAC Staff & Board and Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area (NRGNHA) Board representative, to ensure that the work adheres to the Call for Artists Guidelines.
