¡explora! At The Library

ESPAÑOLA —Nikki Ross, Ivy Little and Kendra Peralta with the ¡explora! Regional outreach education team was in Espanola Wednesday to help the library celebrate National Library Week.

The ¡explora! team that was at the library is a regional outreach team out of Taos. Starting this year the ¡explora! museum in Albuquerque has created three regional outreach teams based in Taos, Las Cruces and Hobbs to bring hands on science learning opportunities to schools and communities throughout the state. Each team covers a geographic section of the state.

The outreach program offers two options for activities, a “family science night” self guided exploration similar to what was conducted at the library Wednesday, or a structured field trip program for schools.

The team is currently in the middle of “field trip season” and the Taos based team is working with ten local schools and community organizations to bring hands on science activities to their children. This includes the school in Tierra Amarilla and Pablo Roybal Elementary in Pojoaque.

A larger contingent from the Albuquerque museum will be in town again this Sunday for the Northern New Mexico Science Showdown at the Holy Cross Gym in Santa Cruz. The ¡explora! museum is helping to organize the event and is bringing several interesting experiments for participants to use. Local students have been trained to be the instructors at these exhibits.

Here are some images and video from Wednesday’s activities at the library.

City Councilor Peggy Martinez joins Jeremiah Murray in the Nail Challenge, an exercite to hang as many nails on a string as possible using only leverage and balance. Councilor Martinez managed to balance 82 nails on the string at one time.
