Senior Sundevils Shine, Pojoaque’s Tapia Takes First at Robertson

The Espanola Valley High School wrestling team took 10 wrestlers to the Robertson Cardinal Classic wrestling meet hosted by Robertson High School Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 in Las Vegas. Led by seniors Dominic Medina and Mario Martinez, the Sundevils scored 183.5 points and finished 15th in the team standings among the 27 teams competing at Las Vegas.
Medina, wrestling at 113 pounds, finished second and earned 58.5 points for Espanola. In the semifinals, Medina pinned Los Alamos’ Donovan Atencio. In the championship bout, Capital High School’s Ryan Romero was able to hold on to a 4-3 decision over Medina. Both Atencio and Romero will compete with Medina for the District 2-5A individual title Feb. 1. Medina finished third at the 2016 Class 5A state wrestling meet. He started late this season after recovering from an automobile accident. He was 5-1 at Robertson.
Martinez wrestles at 126 pounds and he finished second overall to earn 62.50 points for the Sundevils. Martinez had to win seven matches, including a victory by fall over District 2-5A rival Clay Crosby of Albuquerque Academy in the semifinals. Taos High School’s Diego Valerio defeated Martinez in the championship match in a close 6-5 decision. Martinez was 7-1 at Robertson.
Senior Amado Ramirez came in 10th in the 132-pound weight class, earning 23 points. Ramirez won four matches and lost three at Robertson. Edgar Sanchez won his first three matches at 138 pounds, lost his next two, won another match, then lost in his next match and was injured. He had to forfeit his last match. Sanchez finished 14th overall and earned 13.5 points. Alex Najera at 170 pounds and Ace Gabrentina at 220 pounds also came in 14th. Najera earned 9.5 points and won two matches, while Gabrentina scored 5.5 points and also won two matches.
Alejandro Santizo finished 17th and earned six points while winning three matches at 120 pounds. Kalub Romero finished 17th in the 285 pound class. Vicente Martinez wrestled at 220 pounds and came in 23rd.
Espanola will compete in the District 2-5A Individual Championships Feb. 11 at Del Norte High School in Albuquerque.
The Pojoaque Valley High School wrestling team competed at the Robertson Cardinal Classic and finished 18th in the team standings. The Elks/Elkettes earned 138.5 points.
Leading the way for Pojoaque was sophomore Javier Tapia. The defending Class 5A state champion at 145 pounds, Tapia took first at Robertson. He was 8-0, winning all his matches and earning 64.5 points for Pojoaque. He took a 2-0 decision over Robertson’s Tristan Trujillo in the championship matches at 145 pounds. Tapia is 28-0 this season.
Johnathan Chavez came in nineth for Pojoaque at 195 pounds. Chavez pinned Silver High School’s Will Kammerer in his final match and earned 21 points for the Elks.
Henry Roybal took 11th place at 170 pounds and earned 18 points for Pojoaque. He took a 6-2 decision over Robertson’s Javier Mares in his final match.
Brayan Chiquito at 285 pounds and Josh Roybal at 220 pounds both finished in 13th place, each earning 8.5 points for the Elks. Kenneth Salazar at 120 pounds and Sebastian Rubio at 132 pounds each finished 16th for the Elks. Rubio earned six points and Martinez two points. Nathan Velarde took 17th at 126 pounds and Earned eight points. Jaed Pino at 126 pounds and Kameron Tenorio at 138 pounds both finished 21st. Leah Archuleta was 22nd at 152 pounds andearned two points. Adolfo Gomez was 24th at 138 pounds.
Pojoaque will competed today at the District 2-4A duals hosted by West Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas.
