The Española School Board met Wednesday, Aug. 19 for their regularly scheduled meeting at Carlos F. Vigil Middle School. Project manager Clay Simmons reported that construction on

ETS Fairview Elementary is scheduled to be on budget and one time, slated for completion for Oct. 1, 2015.

Española Public Schools Associate Superintendent reported that enrollment is slightly up for the first five days this school year. Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez touted the recent $300,000 grant from the Public Education Department to Española Public Schools to hire an additional six truancy officers.

Public School Facilities Authority Maintain Specialist Larry Tillotson was on hand to present to the board about Española Public School’s Facility Maintenance Assessment Report (FMAR). FMAR is a process tool developed and used by NM Public Schools Facility Authority to evaluate New Mexico school facilities. Tillotson made no qualms about the fact that Española Public Schools needs to do more in preventative maintenance planning in order to ensure a higher FMAR score in future years.

Overall, Española Public Schools facilities were given a poor rating with a five year baseline of 62.08 percent. Board President Pablo Lujan noted, “Our schools are in dire shape due to the lack of funding from the State and the Governor’s veto of a bill that would have allowed Rio Arriba County School District’s to tap into the GRT tax revenue. It is time to focus on solutions to get our facilities back into better conditions for the sake of our children.”
