Espanola Valley High School added the District 2-4A tournament championship to its list of accomplishments this season with a 57-51 victory over Pojoaque Valley High School in the district tournament championship game last night at Edward Medina Gymnasium.
It was the ninth win in a row for the Lady Sundevils and their third over the Elkettes.
Pojoaque led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter and was ahead 20-17 in the second quarter when Destiny Valdez hit two three pointers to give Espanola a 23-20 lead at halftime.
The Sundevils had four three-pointers in the third quarter including three by Anita DeAguero. Espanola led 37-32 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Sundevils changed tactics in the fourth quarter and went to their reliable dribble-and-drive offense to take the ball to the basket before dishing off for easy layups.
