Espanola Boys & Girls Championship Dream Halted In Semi-Finals
Espanola has proven once again that both the boys and girls are a powerhouse in New Mexico basketball, but this year the state championship eluded our home kids. On March 12th the boys advanced to the semi-finals where they faced off against Centennial High School. The Sundevil boys had a slow start in the game and never caught up to the Hawks, but they Espanola boys never gave up, scoring 20 of their 53 points in the fourth quarter. In the end Centennial dominated 80-53 and advanced to the state championship where they defeated Gallup 52-38.
The Lady Sundevils also advanced to the semi-finals where they faced off against Gallup in the Pit on March 12th. The Espanola girls controlled the first and last quarter, but a strong push by the Bengals in the second quarter ran up the points leading to a 78-52 victory for Gallup. Gallup went on to lose to Los Lunas 68-63 in the championship game the next day.
