The Española  Valley High School boys basketball team ran its winning streak to seven games with victories over Kirtland Central High School and Bloomfield High School at the Eddie Pena Holiday Classic basketball tournament hosted by Grants High School. The Sundevils winning streak came to an end in the championship game against host Grants. The Pirates built a 15-point lead in the third quarter after leading by 10 points 41-31 at halftime. Grants held off the Sundevils in the fourth quarter for a 73-66 victory.
Española  started last week winning a nailbiter from traditional rival Santa Fe High School 44-43 Dec. 13 at Santa Fe. The final score was in doubt until Santa Fe’s Oscar Perez missed a free throw that could have tied the game with three seconds left.
In the opening round of the tournament at Grants, Española  led Kirtland Central 42-35 at halftime and extended their lead to 57-46 by the end of the third quarter. The Sundevils outscored the Broncos 21-15 in the fourth quarter for a 78-61 victory.
In the second round of the round-robin tournament, the Sundevils defeated the Bloomfield High School Bobcats 68-60, setting up the showdown with host Grants in the championship game. Grants had defeated Bloomfield 82-50 in the opening round.
Española  was ranked first in the state and Grants was ranked fourth in Class 5A going into the game.
The Sundevils will get a chance to avenge their loss to Grants Friday in Española  when the Pirates come to town. Española  hosts Robertson High School today in Española.
