Elks, Elkettes Win In Opening Round Of Ben Lujan Tournament

The Pojoaque Valley High School boys basketball team had no problem beating the Crownpoint High School Eagles 70-20 in  the opening round of the Ben Lujan basketball tournament Dec. 19 at Pojoaque. The Elks led from start to finish and emptied their bench in the blowout victory as 12 different players scored for Pojoaque.

Pojoaque faces Monte del Sol Charter School Friday in the semifinals. The Dragons defeated Penasco High School 59-40 in the opening round. The Dragons led 31-17 at halftime and 46-27 after three quarter. Kevin Enriquez led Monte del Sol with 22 points.

Crownpoint faces Penasco in the consolation round.

The Santa Fe Indian School Braves defeated McCurdy Charter School 59-41 in the opening round. The Braves led 29-22 at halftime and pulled away in the second half. McCurdy’s Andres Martinez didn’t play for the Bobcats.

Indian School faces Mesa Vista High School Friday in the semifinals. The Trojans won a thrilling battle against Menaul High School on a long three-pointer by Damian Trujillo that beat the final buzzer, giving Mesa Vista a 55-54 victory. Menaul finished the game with just four players on the floor. The Panthers suited up just six players for the game because two players had to take final exams. One player was lost to injury during the game and another fouled out.

Trujillo led all scorers with 35 points, including 16 in the third quarter and 25 in the second half.

McCurdy will face Menaul in the consolation round.

Girl’s Hoops

The Pojoaque Valley Elkettes defeated Crownpoint 54-23 to advance to the semifinals of the Ben Lujan tournament. The Elkettes will face Santa Rosa High School in the semifinals. The Lady Lions defeated Dulce High School 39-31 in the opening round.

St. Michael’s High School will advance to the semifinals to face Bernalillo High School. The Lady Horsemen defeated McCurdy Charter School 47-30 in the opening round. 

In one of the most exciting games of the opening round, Bernalillo High School came from behind to defeat Penasco High School 50-49. Bernalillo was behind most of the game. The Lady Spartans held Penasco to five points in the fourth quarter after trailing 44-37 at the end of the third quarter. 

Carly Gonzales led Penasco with 20 points, but as scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Penasco faces McCurdy in the consolation round.
