Elementary Science Bowl: Students Show Their Science Knowledge
ESPAÑOLA – On Friday, May 22 fifty students from six local elementary schools traveled to Northern New Mexico College to participate in the second annual Elementary Science Bowl Competition. Barbara Becker, a sixth grade teacher from Abiquiu led the organization of the second annual Science Bowl competition for elementary school students in the Española school district.
For years Becker has led sixth grade teams from the district to the state Science Bowl middle school competition in Albuquerque and realized that elementary level students could also benefit from the event. In particular 4th grade students could benefit because they are required to take a state administered standards based science assessment test.
The state Science Bowl is only open to middle and high school students so Becker took it upon herself to create a local event for 4th -6th grade students. In 2014 Becker and a few volunteers came together to hold an “Elementary Science Bowl” on a Saturday because it was not an official school event.
The event was successful enough that this year it is an official school district sponsored event with nine teams from Abiquiu, Alcalde, Hernandez, Dixon, James H Rodriguez and Velarde elementary schools participating.
Other sponsors include Northern New Mexico College’s STEM Outreach program which provided funding to purchase three buzzer systems for the competition. LANL and several local businesses also came together to sponsor the event, making sure students had agreat time while learning more science.
