Eagles XC Qualify For NAIA National Tournament
Commerce City, Colorado and Johnson and Wales University played host to the 2015 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Association of Independent Institutions Conference Championships. In the Men’s Race, Northern New Mexico College’s Augustus Cuch led the way as he maintained a steady pace throughout the 8 kilometer race. A steady pace was just what NNMC Coach Gallegos wanted from his lead runner, and it proved to be the right strategy as Augustus finished a National Qualifying position of 15th place. The National Cross Country meet will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina on November 21, 2015.
In the Women’s race, the NNMC Eagles women’s team finished in 2nd place behind the University of British Columbia. For the Eagles, it was a great achievement for the school and team that is still in its infancy. Shania Harry paced the team with a 9th place finish, followed by Demetria Clichee 12th, Henrena Montoya 14th, Krishia Artieda 19th and Victoria Lovato in 22nd. It was the finish of Victoria Lovato that secured the eagles with the conference runner up trophy, sprinting and passing a University of the Ozarks runner at the finish line beating University of Ozarks by a mere 2 points 83-85. The Eagles still may earn a team at-large bid to nationals, but securing their spots with their performance were Shania Harry, Demetria Clichee, and Henrena Monoya.
