Lea County, NM – On Thursday, September 24, 2020, at about 8:00 p.m. the New Mexico State Police, responded to a two-vehicle, head-on collision on U.S. 380 near milepost 220 west of Tatum, NM.
The initial investigation indicates that a 2011 Mercedes, driven by a forty-seven-year-old Albuquerque, NM man, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 380. For reasons still under investigation, the Mercedes crossed the center line and drove head-on into a westbound 2016 Ford pick-up truck occupied by driver, Otis Kent “Kenny” Comstock (35), and passenger Melissa Nicole Comstock (34) along with their three children ages 6, 4 and 1, all of Odessa, TX.
Mr. and Mrs. Comstock both suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Mr. Comstock was pronounced deceased on scene and Mrs. Comstock was pronounced deceased at an area hospital by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The three children suffered injuries and were transported to area hospitals. The driver and sole occupant of the Mercedes suffered injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The current conditions of those injured is not known.
Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, and seatbelts were properly utilized by the Comstock family. New Mexico State Police does not release the identities of surviving victims or those who have not yet been charged with a crime. For the privacy of those injured, the names of hospitals are not released. This case is under active investigation by the New Mexico State Police with the assistance of the New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
