Girls Varsity start at EVHS’s 2nd Annual Del Valdez Cross Country Invitational on the turf, Sat. August 27, at EVHS Sundevil Stadium. The course is one of the toughest in the state, with foothills to navigate for runners, arroyos, sand and a few surprises. These same hills produced the first team State Champions at EVHS for the Sundevils when the Girl’s 1991-92 Cross Country Team surprised a lot of followers when they snagged the NMAA Girl’s State Cross Country Title in Albuquerque. The 1991-92 girls varsity, coached by Lawrence Naranjo, secured the first “Blue Trophy” to go into the trophy case at EVHS, and did it when all big schools were in Class 4AAAA, so was Espanola Valley.

Four years earlier, EVHS’s first individual NMAA State Girls Cross Country Champion was a runner also coached by Naranjo, and came in all alone at Milne Stadium in the Girls 4A State XC Title race. She was finishing when the second girl varsity runner entered the track on the north end. Who was that runner? Current girl’s Sundevil Cross Country coach, Annabelle Ortiz-Almager. When Ortiz-Almager surprised everyone earlier that season by winning the Santa Fe High School Demon Invitational, a  newspaper sportswriter dubbed her the “Cinderella.”

Del Valdez, on right in photo, helps makes sure all runners are OK, after their race. Always the coach, Del Valdez was honored by having the EVHS Cross Country Invitational changed by officials to the EVHS's (Coach) Del Valdez Cross Country Invitational. Valdez, now retired, was a math and algebra instructor for both Santa Cruz High School and Espanola Valley High School. Valdez was a gifted basketball player and played for the old EHS Hornets and went on to play college basketball.
