City Looking At Possible New Fire Station On North End Of Española
ESPAÑOLA – During the City of Española’s Public Safety Committee meeting held May 6, the City’s fire department gave an update on all recent activity of the fire department.
During the discussion Deputy Fire Chief Eric Tafoya addressed the need to either expand existing facilities or build a new substation. The City Fire department is not currently able to provide adequate shelter for all their equipment, resulting in accelerated aging and deterioration. Trucks and other equipment are stored outside much of the year.
In exploring options to address this issue the city found that State grant funds are available to help fund operations at a substation so long as it is 1.5 miles from any other fire station, making this possibly the more cost effective solution.
City Manager Kelly Duran said during the meeting that the city is moving forward on efforts to open a north side substation and is currently looking for suitable property in their inventory of city owned land.
