“Chili Bowl Cookoff” Winners Profiled

ESPAÑOLA – The eighth annual “Chili Bowl Cookoff” occurred last weekend with winners announced in a variety of categories. For the last eight years northern New Mexico residents have come together for this culinary show down in a fun and festive way to support the San Matin de Porres Soup Kitchen (SMSK). This year’s contest occurred at the Santa Claran in Espanola on Saturday, March 28th.

The San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen was established in July 1992 to serve those in the community who are in need of a nutritious hot meal. For the last eight years the “Chili Bowl Cookoff” has been one of SMSK’s major fundraising events, allowing the kitchen to stay open five days a week, where (in cooperation with the City of Española) they operate out of the Apple Valley Senior Center.

This year’s “Chili Bowl Cookoff” had 26 contestants vying for the championship in the categories of Salsa, Red Chile and Green Chile. There was also a special costume contest for children who had the best theme oriented costume of the day. Hundreds of people paid the admission fee to taste the contestants’ entries and then voted on who they felt were best.
