Car Chase Causes Fatal Accident

Staff Report

A car chase turned deadly for the driver of a blue van apparently caught in the path of a car chase Wednesday on Fairview Lane and Railroad Avenue near Angelina’s Restaurant.

A New Mexico Department of Transportation official confirmed the fatality at the scene, but officials have not yet released the name of the deceased or two occupants in the vehicle who sustained unknown injuries. They were airlifted from the scene.

An eyewitness told the Valley Daily Post that a “black truck and a second van were weaving in and out of traffic as one was trying to get away from the other.”

The eyewitness explained that the vehicles were traveling at high speed during the car chase that caused the blue van to rear-end a dark colored car.

“We have reason to believe that neither vehicle involved in the accident were participants in the chase, but we are still interviewing witnesses and attempting to review security camera footage from nearby businesses,” Espanola Police Chief Richard Gallegos stated Wednesday evening.

The two vehicles involved in the chase that led to the accident fled the scene and are being sought by police.
