BREAKING NEWS: Lorenzo Valdez, Former Rio Arriba County Manager Dies
Lorenzo Valdez is reported to have passed away on Sunday, May 3 following a short illness. DeVargas Funeral Home is reporting on their website that a public visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 6th at 6 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with a private burial to be held at a later date.
The Rio Arriba County Managers Office released the following statement to County employees late Monday morning regarding the passing of Lorenzo Valdez, former County Manager.

It is with great sadness that Rio Arriba County Manager Tomas Campos announces the passing of his predecessor, Mr. Lorenzo Valdez who retired from the post in 2010. Mr. Valdez was County Manager for an astounding 15 years, and was responsible for the expansion and professionalization of many of the services in Rio Arriba County. Before serving as County Manager, Mr. Valdez had served as Director of the County’s DWI Prevention Program and was a mentor and advisor to many current and former staffers at the County.
Mr. Valdez was a life-long resident of the Espanola Valley and was a graduate of New Mexico State University. He was a noted expert and activist on New Mexico’s Land Grants, and Acequias. Mr. Valdez passed away unexpectedly on Saturday and his services are pending. His passing is a huge loss to our Community and to the extended Rio Arriba County Family.
