Bobcats Beat Leopards

McCurdy Charter School’s boys basketball team and girls basketball team each recorded victories over Coronado High School in a basketball doubleheader at Nov. 23 at McCurdy. Both teams evened their records at 1-1 on the season.
After dropping a heartbreaker 54-53 to Mesa Vista High School in their opening game of the season Nov. 19 at Mesa Vista, McCurdy came out hungry to start the game against the Leopards. The Bobcats opened the game with Gabe Huerta draining a three-pointer from the corner. McCurdy took a 9-3 lead and led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter after a three-pointer from Isaac Fresquez and a basket by Ubaldo Barela.
After McCurdy took a 16-7 lead in the second quarter before the Leopards clawed their way back into the game. The Leopards sank 5-of-8 shots from the free-throw line Two baskets by Dustin Chavez tied the score at 16-16 with 4:44 left in the first half.
An old-fashioned, three-point play by Barela gave the Bobcats a 20-16 lead. Coronado came back to tie the score again after a coast-to-coast layup by point guard Diego Jacquez and a jumper by Tim Fuchs. A free throw by Andres Martinez and a layup by Ernesto Martinez gave McCurdy a 23-20 lead at halftime.
The Bobcats started the third quarter going 5-of-6 from the free throw line to take a 28-20 lead. McCurdy was in control through most of the third quarter and led 35-26 going into the fourth quarter.
McCurdy opened up a 41-28 lead in the fourth quarter before Coronado scored. The Bobcats led 43-30, but the Leopards couldn’t close the gap by much with Jacquez now on the bench after fouling out. The action ground to a halt with 2:59 left in the game and the Bobcats leading 43-32. McCurdy held the ball to run time off the clock and Coronado couldn’t take advantage of several turnovers by the Bobcats. Neither team scored again and McCurdy took a 43-32 victory.
There were no players scoring in double figures for either team. Barela had nine points to lead McCurdy, while Chavez had nine points for the Leopards.
Coronado had opened the season with victories over Mesa Vista andPenasco High School. Their record fell to 2-1 with the loss. The Leopards faced Dulce High School Monday at Dulce. McCurdy Hosted Native American Community Academy Tuesday at McCurdy.
The McCurdy Charter School Lady Bobcats used a strong third quarter to pull away from Coronado High School in the second half for a 46-33 victory. After dropping their opening game 43-35 to Mesa Vista High School, blowing a 20-13 halftime lead, the Bobcats had a stronger second half against the Lady Leopards.
McCurdy built a 12-4 lead in the first quarter and led 17-11 at halftime. The score was 20-14 in the third quarter when the Bobcats took off on a 14-0 run fueled by Coronado turnovers and 6-of-9 free-throw shooting. The score was 36-18 at the end of the third quarter.
Coronado cut the lead to 36-21 to begin the fourth quarter. McCurdy built it back up to 42-21, getting three points apiece from Marissa Sandoval and Devyn Cordova. With McCurdy’s starting point guard Karla Santos on the bench taking a breather, the Lady Leopards were able to make the finalscore look a little more respectable.
Coronado’s Soledad (Sol) Vigil led all scorers with 16 points. There were no scorers in double digits for McCurdy, who had eight players score. Sandoval led the Lady Bobcats with nine points.
Coronado had defeated Mesa Vista High School in a low-scoring game 24- 22 Nov. 17 at Mesa Vista. The Lady Leopards hosted Dulce High School Monday and traveled to Tse’ Yi’ Gai High School Tuesday. McCurdy hosts Native American Community Academy Tuesday at McCurdy.
