Adult Literacy Program Finds New Home

Staff Report

The recent renovations to the public library at the Lucero Center have created a new opportunity for the Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program., or RAALP

For the four years of its existence RAALP has been housed in a small supply closet which was provided to them, courtesy of the Espanola Public Library. The recent renovations of the Library have opened up new spaces and RAALP now has a real office to house their volunteer staff and a resource library for their tutors.

On Wednesday, July 6 RAALP Board members along with volunteer tutors, students, the Espanola Valley Chamber of Commerce, UNM-LA and supporters met inside the Lucero Center to formally open the new RAALP office with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program began operations in 2012 as a group of volunteers interested in helping adults throughout the region improve their reading skills in an effort to break the cycle of illiteracy in our community. The program is free of charge and works with any adult seeking to learn to read better, including those who are learning English as  a second language.

The new office is open Monday thru Thursday and Saturday, or by appointment. Call 505-747-6162 or visit for more information and specific office hours.

Welcome home RAALP!
