6 PACC Day Helping Give Youth Alternatives To Alcohol & Drugs
ESPAÑOLA — 384 students from 17 local schools converged on Ranchitos Park on Thursday morning for the 3rd annual 6 PAC (6th graders promoting alternative choices) Conference for area sixth graders.
The 6-PAC Conference was created and hosted by RAC STOP (Rio Arriba County Substance Treatment, Outreach, Prevention) Program. The Youth Resiliency Risk Survey Data shows that Rio Arriba County youth, ages 11 – 13, ranked 2nd in the State for youth trying Marijuana before the age of 13 and youth who drank alcohol on school property, 4th for youth Cocaine use, and 5th for other drug use, so the 6-PAC Conference was originated. The goal was to provide 6th graders with information on alternative choices within their community, and educate them on the dangers/consequences of underage drinking and drug use.
Organizers praised the community assistance, saying the 6-PAC Conference could not have been a success without the assistance of 72 combined supporters which includes: volunteers, monetary & item sponsors, interactive booth participants, community businesses, JCC Youth, 6th grade students, School Boards, Superintendents, Teachers, & Rio Arriba County Departments & Management. Several of the booth participants were on hand providing activities for the youth and teachers. Students were able to try archery, rock climbing, water activity, and a variety of other interactive activities during the day. Educational prizes were also distributed to students, along with a colored lanyard, T-shirt, breakfast bar, juice and lunch was provided.
This year’s event differed in one major way from previous years, because if was located outside to permit more interactive activities during the day. In previous years the conference had occurred at the Santa Claran conference center.
