Bill To Prevent Auto Theft Statewide Advances

SANTA FE – A bill to help prevent auto theft around the state has passed the House Judiciary Committee.

House Bill 529, sponsored by Rep. Raymundo Lara (D-Chamberino), would create an automobile theft prevention fund to help provide resources to prevent vehicle theft.

“This bill is about prevention,” Rep. Raymundo Lara said. “In order to lower our rates of auto theft, we have to create a comprehensive, statewide framework in connection with multiple law enforcement agencies throughout the state. We know this is an issue that many New Mexicans have been impacted by, and this bill helps provide needed outreach and will bring essential stakeholders to the table to implement smart solutions.”

House Bill 529 would authorize the Office of Superintendent of Insurance to collect an annual fee from insurers equal to at least $1 and no more than $10 for each vehicle.

The fee would be deposited into a newly created Automobile Theft Prevention Fund appropriated to the superintendent for the use of the Automobile Theft Prevention Authority created in 2018.

The bill now moves to the House Floor for consideration.
