Big 5 Opens Its Doors!

Staff Report
For residents of the Espanola Valley, no more having to drive to Santa Fe or Albuquerque to find athletic shoes for your kids, or outdoors and sporting equipment for the family. Big 5 Sporting Goods has built and opened a brand new store on north Riverside Drive.

On Thursday afternoon, Sept. 22 city officials, representatives from Rio Arriba County, and dozens of other community members stood outside the new store at 1813 N. Riverside Drive to cut a ribbon officially opening this newest store to the valley.

The ribbon cutting event was partially interrupted by the large power outage that struck the valley Thursday afternoon, but store employees broke open the flashlights and gave attendees a tour of the new building.

Travis Schenk, the store manager for this new location thanked the city of Espanola and the larger community at large for the warm welcome and said Big % looks forward to being a good neighbor and great store. Schenk was joined by representatives of the corporate office from as far away as California.

The City was represented by Mayor Alice Lucero, City Councilors Pedro Valdez and Peggy Sue Martinez, City Manager Mark Trujillo, City Clerk Anna Squires and City Planning & Land Use Director Patrick Nicholson. Mayor Lucero welcomed the store to the community and Nicholson was praised by city attendees for his work in bringing the store to the community and working to ensure Big 5 built a beautiful building that adds value to the neighborhood.

Also notable attendees were David Trujillo, the Deputy County Manager for Rio Arriba County, Annitte Lujan, President of the Espanola Valley Chamber of Commerce and Ben Sandoval with the YMCA Teen Center.

The store opened to the public on Friday, Sept. 23.
