“Rock n Reps” Gym Fundraiser to Benefit Adult Reading Program

A fitness fundraiser for the non-profit Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program (RAALP) will take place at Gino's Gym in Española on Saturday, Feb. 20, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Gino's Gym is located at 1316 Calle Adelante.

The "Rock n Reps for Reading" event will feature a bench press contest, group exercise classes, a strength exhibition and a Latin dance class. An 8:30 a.m. RIPPED exercise class will kick off the fundraiser. Other events include: 9:30 a.m. SilverSneakers group exercise class, 10:00 a.m. ZUMBA class, bench press contest 10:00 a.m. to noon, strength exhibition at 11:00 a.m. and a Bachata dance lesson at noon. The bench press contest will feature competitive and non-competitive divisions. Individuals and groups are encouraged to participate.

“We are looking forward to this fun event that brings together folks who are working out to build a healthier body, and folks who are working on building reading skills for a healthier life,” said RAALP Program Liaison Susan Roybal. “RAALP is grateful that Gino’s Gym has provided a venue for the fundraiser. The money raised will be used to purchase more learning materials for tutor/student teams to read and practice with during their weekly meetings, and to provide more training opportunities for tutors.”

RAALP's mission is to help community members transform their lives through enhanced literacy by providing free, one-to-one tutoring for adults reading at or below 6th grade level. RAALP's tutors are certified by the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy and work with both basic literacy students and English-as-a-Second-Language learners. Currently, the program has 25 students enrolled, with 27 more on the waitlist.

Pledge forms and sign-up sheets for the event can be picked up at Gino's Gym or the RAALP office inside the Española Public Library at the Lucero Center, or call Gino's Gym at 423-2941 or 753-5748 for more information about the fundraiser. Additional information is available at www.raalp.org or at www.Facebook.com/raalp2.
