Velarde Ordered To Stay Open

This past Thursday, August 7, Española Public Schools representatives appeared before District Judge Jennifer Attrep to present evidence as to why Velarde Elementary School should close. Judge Attrep was assigned the case after School Board members voted to close Velarde in 2014 and then Secretary of Public Education Hanna Skandera ordered the school to remain open. After hearing testimony from Española Public Schools and the Public Education Department, Judge Attrep announced she would issue her judgement on Monday, August 10.  However, news broke this weekend that Judge Attrep ruled in Hanna Skandera's favor and ordered the school to remain open citing the claim relied, primarily on the claim that it will lose $500,000 in cost savings from the closing of Velarde Elementary, resulting in a larger budget shortfall. This claim is not well-supported in the motion.”

Although the court has ordered Velarde Elementary to remain open, in a recent School Board meeting, Superintentend Bobbie Gutierrez noted that at the School Boards directive, "we will automatically appeal." The Española School Board will meet tonight, Monday August 10 at 6:00 p.m. at Carlos F. Vigil Middle School.
