Three Candidates File For Mayor Election: City Council Candidates Also File

Espanola – Tuesday, Jan. 9 was filing day for candidates seeking to be elected in the upcoming City of Espanola elections. City Clerk Anna Squires spent the day accepting official filing documents from the ten prospective candidates who filed.

Current Mayor Alice Lucero is not running for reelection, attracting three candidates who filed for the open mayor’s position. City council spots in Districts 1 thru 4 are also up for election. Voters will go to the polls and decide which individuals will serve the city on election day, March 6 later this year.  The election for the City Council District 3 seat appears to be uncontested, as only Denise D. Benavidez filed for the seat. All other races have at least two or three candidates running.

Although municipal elections throughout New Mexico are considered non-partisan affairs, the Democratic predominance in the area was evident as eight of the ten candidates who filed are registered as Democrats. Javier E. Sanchez who is running for Mayor has declined to register with any party and John L. Ricci who is running for City Council District 1 is a registered Republican.
