Sundevils “Hum” Along: Top Taos, 87-56,

By Robert A. Naranjo

TAOS - The Española Valley High School Sundevils (2-0) traveled up State Road 68 Tuesday, Nov. 24 and took on the Taos Tigers in their “House”. The Sundevils jumped out to an early lead within the first five minutes and never looked back putting a hash mark in the win column.

“I didn’t expect that...we played them (Taos) this summer and had some good games, (they) battled well…we just came out and hit some shots…they’re a tough opponent year-after-year,” EVHS Sundevils basketball coach, Richard Martinez, told KDCE’s “RG,” a longtime, multisport play-by-play KDCE Radio Sports announcer and NM Activities Association (NMAA) Hall of Famer in a postgame interview. Asked what he took away from the game, Coach Martinez said, ”…we got to continue doing what we’re doing, first of all--transition, but we can’t get away from basic basketball, working our sets, running our plays and crashing the boards, basic basketball… smart IQ in the game…and developing our players.” ” Coach Richard Martinez told RG. “I like the way we’re jelling,” he said before their discussion turned to the Sundevils next game in Rio Rancho Tuesday, Dec. 1.

“What do you do against a team that a little bit bigger than you and in fact, just as fast as you coming up,” RG asked the coach pointedly. “Rio Rancho is a legitimate contender. They got me this summer three times. We just want to make sure that we just play with them, stay close--we’ll be going into their place,” Coach Martinez responded.

The Sundevils were led by J.P. Sena who had 16 points, Josh Salazar sank three, three-point long range homing missiles in the third Quarter, plus one in the second for 12 points, Uriah Arellano scored 11 giving him 40 counters for two games, an average of 20 for team high after two games, Marcos Flores (yes, QB Zeus from Sundevil Football) had 8 to round off the top scorers. Moreover, all EVHS players entered the game, and all scored except one, according to Rudy Sisneros who does color commentary for KDCE Sports and keeps unofficial stats for use in the broadcast and for the postgame show.

Next game up for the Sundevils is at the large 6A Rio Rancho High, 7 pm, Dec. 1 and will likely be a litmus test for season success.
