State Volleyball Tournament Begins

Coronado High School, Escalante High School, Peñasco High School and Dulce High School have advanced to the New Mexico State Volleyball Championships, which begin Thursday with Pool Play at Rio Rancho High School, Cleveland High School and the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

Class A Coronado received a sixth-seed and will play in Pool C against third-seeded Santa Fe Waldorf School and 10th-seeded Animas High School. Coronado was 18-3 during the regular season with all three losses coming at the hands of Waldorf School in District 1-1A. The Lady Leopards finished second in District 1-1A.

Escalante High School was seeded sixth in Class 2A and will play in Pool C against third-seeded Fort Sumner High School and 10th-seeded Gateway Christian School. The Lady Lobos were 15-7 on the season and 7-3 in District 5-2A. Escalante was the District 5-2A regular season champion.

Peñasco received the 12th seed in Class 2A and will play in Pool A against first-seeded Elida High School and eighth-seeded Tatum High School. The Lady Panthers were 10-14 overall and 7-3 in District 5-2A. Peñasco earned its way into the state tournament by defeating Escalante in the District 5-2A tournament championship game.

Class 3A Dulce received the seventh seed and will play in Pool B against second-seeded Santa Rosa High School and 11th-seeded Eunice High School. The Lady Hawks were 17-3 overall and 6-1 in District 2-3A. Dulce finished first in District 2-3A.

Some familiar faces will not be making an appearance at the New Mexico State Volleyball Tournament this season. Española Valley High School, Los Alamos High School, Pojoaque Valley High School, McCurdy Charter School and Mesa Vista High School were not selected to be part of the 12 teams from their respective classes that will be advancing to the state tournament.

Española valley finished the regular season 7-12 overall and 3-5 in District 2-5A. The Lady Sundevils lost to Los Alamos High School 26-24, 26-28, 23-25, 16-25 in the second round of the District 2-5A tournament. Los Alamos finished the regular season 8-16 and 2-8 in District 2-5A. Los Alamos lost to Capital High School in the semifinals of the District 2-5A tournament. Pojoaque Valley was 10-11 overall and 4-4 in District 2-4A. The Elkettes lost to St. Michael’s High School 16-25, 12-25, 21-25 in the semifinals of the District 2-4A tournament. McCurdy Charter School finished 10-11 overall and lost to Monte del Sol Charter School 25-9, 16-25, 23-25, 19-25 in the first round of the District 2-3A tournament. Mesa Vista was 2-18 on the season and 0-8 in District 5-2A, losing to Mora High School 3-0 in the District 5-2A tournament.
