The Pojoaque Valley High School Elkettes got back to their winning ways with 63-36 victory over Taos High School Feb. 3 at Taos. Bouncing back after a humbling 56-39 loss to Robertson High School Feb. 1 at Pojoaque, the Elkettes improved to 18-3 on the season and 4-1 in District 2-4A.

The Elkettes led by 19 points at halftime and extended their lead to 25 points heading into the fourth quarter against the Lady Tigers.

Taos, whom the Elkettes defeated 66-30 Jan. 17 at Pojoaque, fell to 7-15 overall and 1-4 in District 2-4A.

It was a much-needed win after the loss to Robertson. The Lady Cardinals and the Elkettes were both 3-0 in District 2-4A coming into the game. The Elkettes were looking to defend their home court and take over first place in the district standings. The Cardinals are ranked second in the state in Class 4A with a 20-3 record and are now undefeated 5-0 in District 2-4A.

Pojoaque took a 1-0 lead. Robertson’s Alianza Darley scored the next five points on a basket and a three-pointer. After another free throw by Pojoaque, The Cardinals extended their lead to 9-2 after a basket by Jazmyne Jenkins.

Pojoaque point guard Taylor Roybal scored the Elkettes’ next seven points, canning a three-pointer, sinking a pair of free throws and then sinking a runner in the lane that made the score 11-9 in favor of the Cardinals. After a Robertson free throw, a basket by Ashten Martinez had the Elkettes within a point of the Cardinals. A three-pointer by Tessa Ortiz gave the Cardinals a 15-11 lead after one quarter.

Robertson scored the first seven points of the second quarter on two baskets by Darley and a three-pointer by Briana Roybal to take a 22-11 lead. Taylor Roybal brought her team back with another three-pointer and when teammate Hennessee Calabaza drained another three-pointer, Robertson’s lead had been sliced to seven points 26-19. Robertson came back and a pair of free throws by Angelica Montoya put the Cardinals ahead 31-21 at halftime.

Pojoaque was not taking care of the ball and had 15 turnovers in the first half. The same ball-handling miscues combined with Robertson’s physical advantages of height, quickness and wingspan continued to plague the Elkettes in the second half. The 5-foot, 11-inch Darley, who had nine steals, converted a layup off of one of them that made the score 38-23 in favor of the Cardinals. The score was 39-27 when Ortiz and Briana Roybal canned back-to-back three-pointers to give Robertson a 45-27 lead. A driving layup by Maria Barela put the Cardinals ahead 47-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

Pojoaque tried to come back, but never got closer than 14 points in the fourth quarter and Robertson had a key district win.

Darley finished with 23 points to lead all scorers. Ortiz had 11 points for the Cardinals. Taylor Roybal led Pojoaque with 13 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Ashten Martinez finished with 12 points for Pojoaque.

The Elkettes will get another shot at the Cardinals Feb. 17 in Las Vegas. Pojoaque faces St. Michael’s High School Friday (2/9) at Pojoaque and host West Las Vegas High School Feb. 14 in District 2-4A competition before another big showdown at Robertson.
