Obituaries

The obituaries for Leroy Chacon, Stella Pacheco, Mary Louise Gallegos and Felix Joe Quintana have been provided by the respective funeral homes or family members. Please read on for full details.


Leroy Chacon of Santa Fe

Leroy Chacon, a resident of Santa Fe, passed away July 24, 2017 of natural causes. He was formally of the Espanola Valley, where he was born and raised. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Chacon; parents, Juan and Ignacita Chacon; brothers, Bobby Chacon, Melvin Chacon; sister, Belen Chacon and granddaughter, Lakin Garcia. Leroy was a devoted and loving father and was a devoted member of the Zion Worship Center in Pojoaque, NM. 

He loved to be in church every Sunday and Wednesday. He also had a great joy for the Lord.  He loved music as well as spending time with his puppy Coco. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and carrying long conversations with them, sharing his precious memories and going to concerts.  He owned his own business as a general contractor, and later worked with Joey Lucero, RG & Son, Lockwood Construction. 

He is survived by his children, Rebekah Chacon-Martinez (Meny), Lee Chacon, and Brooke Garcia (Jason); grandchildren, Lee Chacon, Leeann Chacon, Leah Chacon, Rachel Chacon, Sky Garcia, Amanda Brewer and Hailey Chacon; as well as many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. 

Public visitation was held on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory.  A Memorial Service was celebrated on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Zion Worship Center in Pojoaque. 

The family of Leroy Chacon has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.

 


Stella Pacheco of Rio Lucio (Peñasco)

Stella Pacheco, 67, a resident of Rio Lucio (Peñasco) passed away to be with our Lord on Monday, July 31, 2017, with her loving children by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Octaviano and Adiana Pacheco; her maternal grandparents, Jose and Pablita Pacheco; paternal grandparents, Moses and Sophia Pacheco; her spouse of 47 years, Francis Sanchez; sister, Merlinda Vigil; brothers, Charlie Pacheco, Octaviano Pacheco Jr. and Joe Pacheco; special nephew, Joe (Shorty) Mondragon and grandson, Christopher Lueras, may all their souls rest in peace.

Stella loved music, dancing, gardening and baking her famous tortillas. She also enjoyed going for wood and picking piñon. She was a woman of faith and listened to the Rosary every morning on KDCE.

Stella is survived by her six children, Diane Pacheco (Rex), Lawrence Sanchez (Tina), Frances Michelle Sanchez (Louie), Francella Sanchez ( Michael), Vivian Romero (Michael) and Brian Sanchez (Dora); special friend, Richard Montoya; grandchildren, Daniel Trujillo, Gene Ortiz, Desiree Sanchez, Erick Montes, Frankie Medina, Freddie Medina, Kenny Medina, Alexandra Montes, Kevin Medina, MiKayla Archuleta, Alexuis Romero, Alexa Sanchez and Francis Romero; great-grandchildren, Brielle Trujillo, Madeline and Henry Ortiz; brothers and sisters, Orlando Pacheco (Erminia), Rosa Esquita, Oliver Pacheco, Kate Gallegos (Sam), Roseann Mondragon (Orlando), Doris Duran (Ben) and her cat, Mousey of 10 years.

The Pacheco family would like to extend their gratitude to AmberCare Hospice Staff for the wonderful care of their mother. The family is also very grateful for all the prayers, visits and support during this difficult time.

Public visitation was on Friday, August 4, 2017 at the San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Peñasco where a rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m. by the Hermanos. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. also at San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church. Burial took place at the Chamisal Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Gene Ortiz, Desiree Sanchez, Frankie Medina, Freddie Medina, Kenny Medina, Kevin Medina, Freddie Medina Sr., Michael Romero and Michael Archuleta. Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Trujillo, Erick Montes, Alexandria Montes, MiKayla Archuleta, Alexuis Romero, Alexia Sanchez, Francis Romero, Brielle Trujillo, Madeline and Henry Ortiz.

Mary Louise Gallegos of Espanola

Our beloved, Mary Louise Gallegos, 69, was a resident of Espanola, NM and was returned to the Lord on Tuesday, August 1st, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mary was born in Pecos, NM on April 25th, 1948, had lived in Espanola for the past 40 years with her family, and enjoyed 51 wonderful years of marriage to Ernie Gallegos.

She is survived by her husband, Ernie, children; Ernesto Gallegos, Dawn Gallegos-Vigil (husband Paul Vigil), and Andrew Gallegos (wife Jessica Gallegos), grandchildren; Chyanne Gallegos, Caleb Vigil, Aidan and Jacob Gallegos, sisters; Orlin Sena, Vangie Varela, Connie Varela, and numerous other nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy and Luis Encinias and sister Fabby Encinias.

Mary was a strong, caring, loving, generous, selfless individual who cared about others no matter where she went and who she met. She brought joy, love, and laughter to everyone who was in her presence. She would always put others before herself and ask if they were comfortable or needed anything. She would exchange stories and jokes, and would ask to dance to Spanish music with her. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends, traveling with Ernie to Las Vegas, Nevada or to Creede, Colorado for some good fishing.

Everyone who knew her will deeply miss her smile and laughter as her family and friends continue carry on her love and her legacy. The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, well wishes, and friendship.

Public visitation was Saturday, August 5, 2017 at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada in Santa Cruz with a rosary being recited at 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial followed the rosary at 12:00 p.m.

Felix Joe Quintana of Questa/Chimayo

Felix Joe Quintana, 85, of Questa/Chimayo, born September 25, 1931, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, August 2, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix & Raquel Quintana, Max & Candelaria Mascarenas and numerous siblings and other family members.

Felix is one of eleven siblings who grew up on the family ranch in El Rito and went to school in Questa. In 1952, he joined the service and received an early discharge due to illness. Felix started as an Electrical Apprentice in 1956 under Electrical Union Local 611 and later became a proud Journeyman. He started working in Los Alamos in 1963 and retired in 1993.  Felix was commonly known as “Cat” by his friends and co-workers.  Felix had a great sense of humor and was known for his pranks and making people laugh.

Felix had a great love of animals and carried that with him throughout his life. In 1967 Felix and his wife, Elsie moved to Chimayo and Felix realized his dream of having his own ranch with horses and livestock. In his younger years Felix had a passion for the outdoors and spent a lot of time camping, fishing and hunting with his family. Felix was a very hard worker and by example and success, showed his children the value and rewards of hard work. He also taught his children the skills needed to be successful in work and life.

After Felix retired, he and Elsie moved back to El Rito where they were surrounded by their relatives. They remained in El Rito until Elsie had a sudden illness and they moved in with their sons and families in the Española Valley.

He is survived by his beautiful wife of 63 years; Elsie Quintana and children, Harold Quintana, Lorenzo Quintana & Pita Salazar, Christine & Donald Hedrick, Charles & Diane Quintana. He is also survived by six siblings, eighteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, numerous other family members and many close friends.

Felix was such a great presence in his family’s lives and was loved by all.  He will be dearly missed!

Public visitation was held on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary at 4:00 pm. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, August 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Church in Cerro. Burial followed at the Cerro Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Henry Quintana, Harold Quintana, Jr., Allen Quintana, Brendon Hedrick, Kurtis Quintana, and Jacob Saiz.  Honorary pallbearers were all remaining grandchildren. Immediately following the burial, a reception was held at the V.F.W. in Questa.
