Northern hosts New Mexico Women in Film PSA Screening

Northern New Mexico College will host New Mexico Women in Film (NMWIF) as they screen their 2017 Public Service Announcement on behalf of Tewa Women United on Saturday, January 20 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Center for the Arts.

Every year NMWIF works with a non-profit organization to produce a PSA, and in 2017 the group worked with Tewa Women United on a film that explores the “correlation between violence against women and violence against mother Earth,” as was the vision of NMWIF board member Leslie Fleming-Mitchell.

The event will feature the premiere screening of the NMWIF sponsored PSA, and talks by the film’s producer and director, Leslie Fleming-Mitchell, and Kena Hinojos from Tewa Women United.

As the PSA features a Native American women’s organization, the event will also screen the following documentary and short films by Native women filmmakers:

Return to Rainy Mountain, a documentary celebrating the life and legacy of author N. Scott Momaday and the rich cultural history of the Kiowa people, directed and produced by Jill Momaday.

Raven, written and directed by Razelle Benally, Sweet N Lowe, written and directed by Felicia Nez, Between Worlds, written and directed by Ramona Emerson, Mayors of Shiprock trailer, written and directed by Ramona Emersaon

The screening coincides with events and marches across the country to mark a year since the Women’s March, and celebrates the work and talent of women in New Mexico.
