Northern Film Students to Showcase Documentary at Santa Fe’s Violet Crown

Hizo lo que quiso (She Did It Her Way), a documentary film co-directed by Northern New Mexico College film students Stephanie Martinez and Daniel Valerio, will play as part of the 2017 New Mexico Student Filmmaker Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 18th at the Violet Crown in Santa Fe.

The film is about Veronica Ortiz, an iconic singer and song writer from El Rito, who shares her fascinating and unconventional life story.

“Stephanie and Danny along with our TV Production class worked magic to capture Veronica’s complicated nature and character. There is no one else like her,” said David Lindblom, Stephanie and Danny’s film teacher at Northern.

"Stephanie and Danny's work speaks to our film program's commitment to experiences close to our hearts and about where we live," Lindblom added.

Stephanie received her Film and Digital Media Arts degree from Northern in 2016, while Danny is working towards a degree in Environmental Science alongside his many film projects.

“You can’t have a video unless you have a compelling story and that’s what Veronica had. Not only that but she was an inspiration and a strong woman. She was straightforward about her life and decisions,” said co-director Stephanie Martinez.

"We learned to make movies by making movies. Veronica's movie was a challenge. It took three years. Continuity is important and we had to find the flow of her life," said Daniel Valero, producer and co-director.

The 2017 New Mexico Student Filmmaker Showcase will start at 12:00 pm and include student films from colleges across the state.
