McCurdy Charter School was the only local baseball team to advance to the state baseball playoffs. The Bobcats made the most of their opportunity and upset Laguna-Acoma High School 8-3 in the opening round of the Class 3A state baseball playoffs May 3 at Laguna.

McCurdy, seeded 12th in the playoffs, jumped on the fifth-seeded Hawks for three runs in the first inning and led 5-2 after two innings.

“We were aggressive and scored right away,” McCurdy Coach Roberto DeVargas said. “That put the pressure on them (Laguna). That was the key.”

McCurdy starting pitcher Kemmer Croff went the distance for the Bobcats, striking out eight batters and issuing just one walk. Isaac Fresquez, the only senior in McCurdy’s starting lineup, had two hits and two runs-batted-in for the Bobcats. Isaiah Archuleta had three hits and scored two runs. Matt Martinez had two RBI’s. McCurdy had 12 hits, drew three walks, stole three bases and had three batters hit by a pitch.

Coach DeVargas recalled an earlier game in his career at McCurdy where the 12th-seeded Bobcats upset Gateway Christian School 5-4 in the opening round of the Class A-2A state baseball playoffs. He used that as an example to motivate his team.

McCurdy advances to the state quarterfinals in Rio Rancho. The Bobcats will face the fourth-seeded Raton High School Tigers May 10 at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho. Raton, a District 2/3-3A rival of McCurdy, swept a doubleheader from the Bobcats 10-0, 8-7 April 22 in Raton. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
