In the both of their victories, the Bobcats built a lead in the third quarter and had to survive rallies by their opponents in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

In the opening round of the consolation Dec. 15, the Bobcats faced Wingate High School. The Lady Bears led 12-11 after the first quarter and 30-26 at halftime. McCurdy took control of the game in the third quarter. Getting balanced scoring throughout its lineup, the Bobcats put 20 points on the board.

The Bears mounted a furious comeback, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats once again used balanced scoring to weather the storm. Six players put points in the scorebook. Despite losing point guard Santos to fouls, McCurdy hung on for a 60-58 victory. Santos finished with 13 points and Barela 12 points for the Bobcats.

McCurdy faced Bernalillo High School Dec. 16 in the consolation championship. The Bobcats had a strong first half. The Bobcats put 16 points up in the first quarter to take a 16-6 lead. Once again, balanced scoring helped McCurdy, as six players put points in the scorebook. In the second quarter McCurdy added 13 points and all but two of those points came from the free-throw line. The Bobcats were 11-of-12 from the charity stripe, including 4-for-4 by Marissa Sandoval. McCurdy led 29-17 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Bernalillo had 14 points thanks to a couple of three-pointers by Gabby Varela. McCurdy managed just 10 points but still led 39-31 going into the fourth quarter.

Bernalillo staged a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter and twice cut McCurdy’s lead down to two points. The Spartans focus on offense gave McCurdy opportunities to score on fast-break Layups and the Bobcats withstood the challenge, once again despite having lost Santos to fouls. Sandoval’s old-fashioned, three-point play with 30 seconds left to play gave the Bobcats a 52-47 lead. A pair of free throws by Azaira Arroyo sealed the win and McCurdy hung on for a 54-49 victory.

Sandoval led McCurdy with 17 points. Azaira Arroyo scored 11 points for the Bobcats.

McCurdy improved to 5-3 on the season. The Bobcats face Mora High School Wednesday (12/19) at McCurdy.
