By George Morse Sports and Outdoors

The Escalante High School Lobos improved to 6-0 on the season with a 44-22 victory over Jal High School Sept. 29 in Tierra Amarilla. Escalante dominated the first three-quarters of the game, leading 30-0 at halftime and 37-0 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lobos called off the dogs in the fourth quarter and Jal was able to score 22 points to make the final score appear less one-sided.

Escalante’s normally run-oriented option offense unleashed a potent passing attack against the Panthers. Escalante quarterback Esteban Archuleta completed 14-of-17 passes for 212 yards and threw for four touchdowns. Cody Russom caught eight passes for 133 yards and snared three of Archuleta’s four touchdown tosses. Anthony Paul Martinez grabbed six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Freshman Brendon Giles replaced Archuleta at quarterback and completed one pass in two attempts, including a 31-yard completion to Martinez.

Archuleta ran for two more touchdowns and gained 44 yards on 10 carries. Giles scored a touchdown on the ground for the Lobos.

The Lobos recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass against the Panthers.

Escalante takes on McCurdy Charter School Saturday (10/7) in Española. This once-heated rivalry has been dominated by Escalante since 2013. McCurdy picked up its first win of the season Sept. 29 with a victory over Laguna-Acoma High School.

MCCURDY CHARTER SCHOOL

The McCurdy Charter School Bobcats picked up their first win of the season with a 31-12 victory over Laguna-Acoma High School Sept. 29 at Laguna. The score was tied 6-6 at halftime. McCurdy dominated in the second half and took a 19-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

McCurdy quarterback Ernesto Martinez completed 5-of-7 passes for 84 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown pass to Raul Arroyo for the Bobcats’ first touchdown. In the second half, Jacob Martinez ran for a pair of touchdowns, including a run of 70 yards. Brandon Lovato ran for one touchdown in the fourth quarter. Ernesto Martinez returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown for the Bobcats’ final score that sealed the victory for McCurdy.

The win keeps the Bobcats’ slim hopes for a second-place finish in District 2/6-3A alive. McCurdy improved to 1-5 on the season and 1-1 in District 2/6-3A. McCurdy faces Escalante Saturday (10/7) in a non-district game at McCurdy.

ESPAÑOLA VALLEY

The Española Valley High School football team suffered its third straight loss, falling to Aztec High School 54-12 Sept. 29 at Aztec. The Tigers led 48-6 at halftime. Nick Martinez ran for both of Española’s touchdowns.

Española fell to 2-4 on the season. The Tigers picked up their first win of the season and improved to 1-4 overall.

The Sundevils will try to snap a three-game losing streak and pick up their first win in District 2-5A when they take on Albuquerque Academy Friday (10/6) in Española. The Chargers are 1-5 on the season.
