Local Athletes Compete at All-Star Basketball Games

Local athletes from Coronado High School, Dulce High School, Escalante High School, McCurdy Charter School and Pojoaque Valley High School will finish their high school careers competing for the North teams in the North-South All-Star game series sponsored by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.

Dominic Roybal (photo above) will represent Pojoaque in the Class 3A/4A boys basketball game June 10 at Cibola High School in Albuquerque. A consistent double-digit scorer for the Elks, Roybal moved between guard and forward. He also ran cross country and track for the Elks.

Coronado’ Diego Jacquez will play in the Class 1A-2A boys basketball game July 26 at Eldorado High School in Albuquerque. Jacquez played point guard. He was a three-sport athlete for the Leopards. Jacquez ran at the 2016 Class 1A/2A state cross country meet and represented Coronado at the Class 1A-3A state track and field meet.

Dulce’s Anfernee Callado and Tyrese Morgan will play for the Hawks in the Class 3A/4A boys basketball game June 10 at Cibola High School in Albuquerque. Callado, a point guard, and post Morgan led Dulce to the District 2-3A title and into the semifinals of the Class 3A state basketball tournament.

They were defeated by eventual state champion Pecos High School. Both Morgan and Callado competed in track and field for the Hawks. Callado also ran cross country. Morgan was a member of the football team.

Waylon Hinds of Escalante will play in the Class 1A/2A boys All-Star basketball game. Hinds was a three-sport athlete and will also play in the Class 6-man/2A All-Star football game. Hinds was also the Class 2A state champion in the 200-meter run.

For the girls, Tori Salazar and Alex Marquez will play in the Class 1A-2A girls All-Star basketball team Salazar was a force to be reckoned with in the paint. Marquez played forward and shooting guard for the Lady Lobos. Both also played volleyball and were on Escalante’s track and field team.
