The Española  Valley High School Lady Sundevils got off to a slow start against Los Alamos High School Jan. 27 in a District 2-5A contest at Española.
Leading by just a point at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Sundevils picked up the pace behind a pressing defense in the second and third quarters.
Española  led 37-17 heading into the fourth quarter and went on to a 53-33 victory.
Española  had taken a quick 5-0 lead to start the game. Then the ball quit falling through the basket and post Alexis Lovato picked up two personal fouls. Los Alamos came back and cut the lead to a single point, 7-6, at the end of the first quarter.
The shots still weren’t going in for the Lady Sundevils and Lovato picked up her third personal foul less than two minutes into the second quarter.
With Lovato on the bench, the Sundevils started to turn things around by creating turnovers.
Leading just 14-9, Española  put together a 9-0 run highlighted by back-to-back steals and layups by Alycia Archibeque and Leah DeAguero. DeAguero added a sweet layup in traffic and a pair of free throws.  She finished the first half with 13 points and Española  led 23-9 at halftime.
“Lexi’s (Lovato) foul trouble didn’t help us at all,” Española  Coach Cindy Roybal said. “Our shots weren’t falling. That’s fine. You can’t stop shooting. I’d rather a missed shot than a bad pass or a turnover.”
Lovato returned to the floor in the third quarter. She and DeAguero combined to score 12 points, the last two on a sweet assist from Lovato to DeAguero for a layup in the lane.
Española  led by 20 points 37-17 heading into the fourth quarter.
Annalynn Martinez came in off the bench to score five points and help the Sundevils push the lead to as many as 26 points, 47-21, in the fourth quarter.
DeAguero finished the game with 22 points to lead the Lady Sundevils. Lovato finished with 10 points.
The Lady Sundevils improved to
13-5 overall and 2-1 in District 2-5A. They are currently ranked fifth in Class 5A.  Española  has two key games in District 2-5A this week.
The Lady Sundevils hit the road to Del Norte High School Wednesday and took on the Lady Knights in Albuquerque.
Española  has never won at Del Norte since the Lady Knights joined District 2-5A in  the 2014- 2015 season.
“We always play bad down there,” Coach Roybal said. “We’re going to change it this year.”
Española  hosts Albuquerque Academy Friday at Española . The Lady Chargers beat the Lady Sundevils 38-34 Jan. 18 in Albuquerque in Española ’s District 2-5A opener. The Sundevils have to defend their home court.
If Academy pulls off another victory over the Lady Sundevils, the Lady Chargers will hold a 2-0 advantage in head-to-head competition that could be the tiebreaker if both teams end up tied in the District 2-5A standings.
