Labor Day Weekend At Bandelier: Cultural Demonstrators And More

Submitted by Carol A. Clark

It's hard to believe, but it's already Labor Day weekend! Bandelier National Monument will have not one, but three, cultural demonstrators on the three days of the holiday weekend. All of them have been coming to Bandelier for many years to demonstrate their work, so while some visitors may not have met them before, others may enjoy the chance to see them again.

The Candelaria family from Santo Domingo Pueblo are known for their traditional pottery, as are the Fraguas from Jemez Pueblo. AnnJeannetta David-Baca, who is Hopi but lives nearby at Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan) Pueblo, makes carved figures. They are all scheduled to demonstrate their work on the back patio of the Bandelier Visitor Center 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, Sept. 2-4.

The rangers will also be offering programs. Weather permitting, these are at the Juniper Campground Amphitheater starting at 8 p.m., and both campers and non-campers are welcome. On Thursday night, Aug. 31, there will be a Night Sky Program, which includes a ranger talk and the opportunity for sky viewing through telescopes. Friday night, September 1, will be "Fabric of Frijoles", about Ancestral Pueblo weaving, and Saturday, Sept. 2, will be "Night Songs", about natural night sounds. Programs the following weekend, Sept. 7-9, will include Night Sky on Thursday, "Fabric of Frijoles" Friday, and "Fire at Bandelier", about the history of wildfires in the Bandelier area, on Saturday.

The Bandelier Trading gift shop and the bookstore in the Visitor Center will have their usual wonderful variety of things, with selected items on sale.

Visitors traveling to Bandelier should remember that the shuttles will continue through mid-October, so anyone arriving at the park between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. will need to catch the bus from the White Rock Visitor Center. Saturday, Sept. 2, will be the last of this year's Artist Markets that the White Rock Visitor Center sponsors next to their building monthly throughout the summer.

For more information on shuttles or Bandelier National Monument, contact the park Visitor Center at 505.672.3861 x 517. Bandelier also has a website, www.nps.gov/band, a Facebook page, BandelierNPS and Twitter.
