Fiesta Council Honors 2017 Living Treasure

The 2017 “Living Treasure” Has been named; Lucia “Lucy” Vigil,94-year-old lifelong resident of Española’s West Side, will serve as the 2017 Fiesta Del Valle de Española Living Treasure. Vigil will become the first person to serve for this inaugural program.
She is the eldest daughter of Elfido & Beatriz
Martinez; and had three siblings all of whom are presently deceased. Mrs. Vigil graduated from the Española School system where she met the love of her life Eddie Vigil; and they were married in 1943 until his passing in 1984. Lucy & Eddie bore four children: Beatrise, Amalia, Eduardo, and Paul who died shortly after birth.
Vigil worked for many years at People’s Department Store in Downtown Española for many years. She also worked for the Española Hospital, which later encouraged her to pursue applying to the McCurdy School of Nursing where she attained her
licensed Practical Nursing certificate in 1975. Mrs. Vigil was later hired by the Española Municipal School District where she worked for many years as a school nurse until her retirement in 1983. Many of her former students fondly remember receiving car rides home in her beloved 1970s era white Volkswagen bug aptly named “Susie;” that can still be often seen traveling Coronado Avenue on the West Side to and from daily mass.  Vigil continues to be an active and engaged member of her West Side neighborhood as well as the Española Valley. She is an active parishioner at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish; where she currently serves as the longest serving member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Altar Society. For many years after her retirement as a nurse, she visited the homebound residents of the community as a Eucharistic Minister.
Vigil hopes the Living Treasure Program continues in order to enable other lifelong residents to participate and is honored that the Española Fiesta Council has selected her to serve in this role for this year.
