A woman has died in the multivehicle crash Friday afternoon near Buffalo Thunder on U.S. 84/285. Several others involved in the collision were injured and transported to area hospitals, according to news reports.

The crash caused U.S. 84/285 to be shut down in both directions for hours and commuters from Los Alamos, Española and Santa Fe were directed onto frontage roads.

The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. when an 18-year-old driver in a Chrysler Sebring traveling northbound lost control of the car and crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting a southbound Acura, according to police. The woman driving the Acura was killed in the collision and her passenger injured. The impact caused the Acura to hit a Volkswagen Jetta from Colorado.

Reports indicate that the driver in the Sebring and a child passenger not wearing seat belts were ejected from the vehicle. The child is in critical condition and the driver reportedly has less serious injuries.

The driver and passenger in the Jetta were treated for minor injuries and released, according to police.
