Española Valley Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration

The New Mexico Humanities Council, in cooperation with the McCurdy Ministries will be hosting a public celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and a discussion of the legacy of African Americans in New Mexico on Monday, January 15, 2018 10:00 a.m.

A special presentation will be made by Brenda Ballou Dabney, a 3rd generation native of

Albuquerque and member of the African American community in New Mexico.

This is a presentation on the African-American presence in New Mexico from 1870- 1930. This talk revolves around four themes: original families, social organizations, entrepreneurship and patterns of segregation and integration. The presentation and discussion are enhanced by oral histories as told by descendants of early African-American settlers. Also included are photographs, documents and books.
